Free Motion Motifs & Appliqué

Class Length: 4 or 6 hours

Description

Create stand-alone embroideries and appliqués using free motion stitching. These embroideries are not sewn onto a background fabric. This provides several advantages.

Densely stitched free motion embroideries often cause their background fabrics to pucker. We will be stitching on water-soluble stabilizer or netting, then stitching the completed appliqué to its background. The background fabric is much less likely to pucker using this technique.

Also, these free standing appliqués give you complete flexibility in placement and design and allow for dimensional effects.

I will cover suitable stabilizers and how to build up a network of stitches to support the design and create a solid "fabric" of stitches. Then we will work with thread painting, including direction of stitch, color blending and shading.

Skills and Skill levels required for class

Students should be familiar with their sewing machine and standard sewing. Some experience with free motion sewing may be helpful.
